Screw Jak System for Laying Tiles on Decks
Recent changes to legislation have impacted the design of decks and how tiles and pavers can be laid over the deck. In summary, deck surfaces should now be removable for access to waterproofing membrane and there needs to be a 100mm step down from the floor level to the deck level.
Screwjaks provide a method to make tiles removable, while being height adjustable, they allow the tiles to be raised up to the level of the living space.
Screwjaks are made from high density polypropilene injection moulding. They are age and weather resistant and fully compatible with all roofing materials. The pedestals are simply freestanding on the membrane with the paving sitting into the corners of the Screwjaks.
Tiles and pavers must be strong enough to carry foot traffic weight, when supported on four edges.
Please refer to the technical specification in the references.

Load Testing
RAK Stone and RAK Lounge Series are superior products in terms of commercial use and load capacity. The RAK Stone and RAK Lounge Series have been independently tested by Opus International Consultants to measure the load capacity of these tiles when supported on pedestals.
Testing carried out on 17th June 2008:
| Material Type | Applied Load | |
| Newtons | Kilograms | |
| 600x900x20mm thick RAK Stone |
7640 | 779.6 |
| Material Type | Applied Load | |

Slip Resistance Reports
Tests were carried out by Safety Step (NZ) ltd in accordance with AS/NZS 3661.1:1993 Slip Resistance of Pedestrian Surfaces. This is the current standard, however there is a later standard which has been adopted in Australia and may be adopted in New Zealand in the future. This is AS/NZS 4586:1999. This standard and associated Hand Book (HB 197:1999) is more descriptive of the levels of slip resistance required in various areas.
Requirements for Exterior Horizontal Surfaces wet and normal use: When tested in accordance with the method for the measurement of the coefficient of friction of Wet Surfaces, the pedestrian surface shall have a mean coefficient of friction of not less than 0.40 and no specimen in that sample shall be less than 0.35
Our RAK products under these tests performed very well with the below results outlining the slip resistance, sample mean coefficient of friction:
| Product Description | Size | Mean Coefficient of Friction |
| RAK 073 Stone Bone | 600x900 | 0.60 |
| RAK 220 Stone Grey | 600x900 | 0.45 |
| RAK Lounge Series Grey Roccia | 1000x1000 | 0.44 |
| RAK Lounge Series Ivory Roccia | 1000x1000 | 0.42 |
| RAK Lounge Series Anthricite Roccia | 1000x1000 | 0.45 |
| RAK Lounge Series Toffee Roccia | 100x1000 | 0.47 |
Acoustics Measurements
We have had RAK Stone and Lounge Series tested by Acoustic experts Norman Disney and Young. They have tested the "Normalised impact sound pressure levels according to STM e989 Field measurements of impact sound insulation of Floors".
The measurement procedure in general accordance to ISO 140-7.FIIC rating determined in accordance to STM E989:
| Product | Measurement Space | Description | Field Impact Insulation Class (FIIC) |
| RAK Stone | From balcony area to below space | 600x900mm, 20mm thick porcelain tile on upright/stool/pod. Unispan Floor Slab with 90mm concrete topping. | 54 |
| RAK Lounge Series | From balcony area to below space | 1x1m, 14mm thick porcelain tile on upright/stool/pod. Unispan Floor Slab with 90mm concrete topping. | 51 |
Impact Insulation Testing Acoustics
Norman Disney Youngs test procedure was conducted according to ISO 140:7 and results calculated in accordance with ASTM E989.
They have conducted a total of eight tests which provide some initial guidance and reassurance that Heritage Tiles can meet and exceed the required New Zealand Building Code performance Standard. The tests included:
- The single figure FICC Values.
- The relationship between the FICC result and NZBC G6 performance requirement
- FIIC improvement over the bare slab performance.

Auckland City Council Regulations - http://www.dbh.govt.nz
In light of the recent Auckland City Council published practise notes indicating: "building consent after the 3rd September 08 will not accept direct fixing of tiles to a membrane as it does not permit proper maintenance to occur".
See references Bld-142-PN: External and internal membranes - alternative solutions 2.5 Concrete Structures paragraph 10.
The RAK Stone or RAK Lounge Series products combined with the Nuralite Pod system allows access to the waterproofing membrane on decks and can be viewed as an alternative solution.
Refer to Acceptable solution E2/AS1 for Building Code page 50 and 51 July 2005.
Please see this extract below summarising this issue in the Auckland City Council Practise notes. Please refer to the references for the full set of practise notes and further detail on these regulations.
BLD-142-PN: External and internal membranes - alternative solutions.
Building consents lodged prior to 3 September 2008 must be constructed as per the approved building consent. Building consents lodged on or after 3 September 2008 must be constructed in accordance with this practice note.
2.2 Direct fixing of tiles and other products onto membranes
It has been a common practice to fix tiles directly onto membranes. Direct fixing does not allow for inspection or maintenance of the membrane and makes leak detection difficult and repairs costly. Direct fixing of tiles on membranes is not covered in the New Zealand Building Code compliance document clause E2/AS1 and is therefore considered an alternative solution.
Consideration for maintenance of the membrane is made in reference to the comment within clause E2/AS1 which states "Access to the underlying weather tight surface, for cleaning and maintenance, must be provided". Based on our current experience, we interpret this statement to mean that direct fixing of tile to a membrane does not permit proper maintenance to occur.
Alternative methods to achieve a tiled or similar appearance without direct fixing are provided under clause E2/AS1 figures 17a, 17b. When considering this type of design, it is important to maintain sufficient air space under the tiled surface to allow for free water drainage. This also enables the tiled surface to be lifted without damaging the membrane for maintenance and repair of the membrane.
Note: Auckland City Environments no longer accepts tiles direct fixed onto membranes as a means of compliance with clause E2/AS1 effective 3 September 2008.

Cleaning Guidelines for RAK Stone and Lounge
Initially water for light soiling is the best option, this could be used with scrubbing and a neutral cleaner or light detergent. This can then be followed by water blasting for heavier soiling.
Neutral cleaners such as Aquamix are also a great option, and can be brought from a Heritage Tiles store.
Harsh cleaning products and wax and polish are generally not recommended.
RAK Engineered Porcelain have been kiln fired with a sealer glaze to stop surface staining.
Cleaning Guidelines for RAK Stone and Lounge
1. How does Pollution effect colouration? and how do we remedy this?
RAK Stone and RAK Lounge are impervious to pollution (i.e. exhaust fumes etc) due to the fact a sealer glaze is added into the firing process of this when manufacturing in the factory.
2. How is Impact Testing carried out?
As per European standards and Opus International are currently undertaking this test.
3. What loads do these two products take?
RAK Stone and RAK Lounge Series are superior products in terms of commercial use and load capacity. The RAK Stone and RAK Lounge Series have been independently tested by Opus International Consultants to measure the load capacity of these tiles when supported on pedestals. For further information, please refer to the "Load Testing" section.
4. How cost effective are the RAK Stone and Lounge Tiles?
Very cost effective, due to:
- large module sizes
- installation time is approximately halved
- performance
- less screwjacks per M2
- low maintenance and less or no acoustics required
5. Why use RAK Engineered Porcelain instead of Natural Stone or Granite?
- Less weight per M2
- Shipping cost savings due to 50% - 60% more product in a container
- Thickness restrictions (Natural Stone recommend thickness should be 40mm)
- Engineered Porcelain is far superior in accuracy tests for load bearing and slip resistance
- Environmentally friendly (no mining of quarries). See Environment Policies and Management Systems
